Lyrics

Wildewood [EP: While the Light Lasts]

Brothers

Brothers never close doors like lovers, they never say goodbye

Unlike fleeting temptation, they trust until they die

[Mountain roads used to lead home, now they remind me I’m alone

And wishing a lover would come and make me forget]

But I’ll keep doing what I’ve done all week, it’s been a rough month for me

A mighty hand was sent down and laid my brother to sleep

[Chorus] but I remember yet

Hold Me Down

Forgive me, I do not know why I run but something turned me out and I came undone

[You may try to hold me down, you may try to let me go

All I know is when I was so sure about it, my heart was broken]

How do I show you around, I do not know the way, your eyes wander off but your smile makes me stay

[You may try to hold me down, you may try to let me go

All I know is when I was so sure about it, my heart was broken]

Do you wait for signs that tell you I’m not what you need

Or do you see yourself getting down on one knee…

We pull so much out of the other, I want to build you up, what do you hope to take from me, why can’t it just be

Burden

Suddenly I feel more like my mother than I ever thought I’d allow

She never does let the good things break on down

Suddenly I feel okay about growing older and moving away and

Calling today’s mistakes my burden

[It passes through ya with a hallelujah]

When we finally realize our parents are just as scared as us

To lose the landscape in front and the sky above

Maybe then we can use our similarities to reassure them we’ll do our best

To teach our own children to remember

[Chorus]

Now I hear my father, he’s preaching of his love for his wife

How if it weren’t for Jesus he wouldn’t be so kind

His best friend taught him how to stand and face his demons, write his sermons

And helped me face my own demons as well

[Chorus]

Lemon Moon

All the people come out and are wandering around thinking, “Oh, where is my love?”

Everyone who remains is alone

The Lemon Moon has come back to take every better half where they go, nobody knows

But the sky sees each on his own

[Lemon Moon, take me too, though I am not what you want

I did try to be kind but my dark heart it will not do]

His eyes were the deepest blue and he used to sing for you, how easily you let him in

Always thinking that he would escape

Now his garden’s turned to disrepair, no more flowers anywhere, but the birds continue their rounds

In the uninspired parade

[Lemon Moon, take me too, though I am not what you want

I did try to be kind but my dark heart it will not do]

Had I known, would I have looked lower, lower to find somebody not so fine

Fine like the breeze, easily the best being I ever laid my eyes upon

Goodbye, Morgan

Half a mile down from our front porch I watched you marching

In between the front lines and their guns I couldn’t quite make out your face

But I could tell you weren’t scared, you thought “Now this time I’ll make my mother proud”

Shannon was your best friend, you both signed up first thing that morning

Always side by side and finding yourself in the same old place

And when he fell you reached over and held his head up making your mother proud

[Tonight when the sun sets I hope you’re safe in bed and homeward bound by morning]

Papa’s reading letters growing weary saying you won’t be back by Christmas

Here’s a coat I sent for cold nights so you can fight off the frost

If only you could see your sister’s eyes you’d know you’re making your family proud

Every night just before she’s tucked in she starts a-praying

“Lord watch over Morgan, he’s a skilled man, but even soldiers feel lost”

And how she smiles when you write of the good things you have seen go make your family proud

[And tonight when the sun sets I hope you’re safe in bed and homeward bound by morning]

Dressed in black and carrying a casket Papa was quiet as a stone

Your sister wept and then I told her “Morgan gave all he could give

of his courage, and now Morgan and Shannon are walking together again and made their families proud.”

Now Morgan is homeward bound and made his mother proud
